SOUL FRIEND-Anam Cara History

From the Ancient Celtic tradition we have been given the beautiful legacy of the "Anam Cara" or "Soul Friend". A predecessor of our modern disciplines of psychology, counseling and spiritual direction, A Soul Friend is someone who accompanies the the seeker or pilgrim on her or his journey towards creating a stronger relationship to Divine Presence. In ancient Celtic Christianity, a Soulfriend could be a woman or man, priest or village wise-woman. .

As a trained therapist I merge spiritual inquiry and psychology on the path of healing and transformation. This merging I call “Soulfriending”, honoring Celtic wisdom . My invitation is towards renewal and simplifying our lives in order to create beauty and balance. I utilize expressive arts and dream exploration to honor the richness of the subconscious mind. The seeker comes to find their own divine voice.

For those seeking therapy, Soulfriending can be an alternative to crisis- oriented or pathology based work. Some forms of psychotherapy are better suited for those seeking treatment for psychological problems. It is crucial to find the right treatment and I will offer referrals when necessary.

Most people I see are in a transformational stage in their lives and are seeking guidance. They understand that the events in their lives reflect a purpose, however hidden. There are no mistakes, no coincidences, but a continuous thread of revelation, teaching us who we are truly meant to be.

John O'Donohue, (1954-2008)Irish poet, philosopher and Catholic scholar and author of the book entitled "Anamcara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom" wrote:

"We should not force ourselves to change by hammering our lives into any predetermined shape. We do not need to operate according to the idea of a predetermined program, plan or goals for our lives. Instead, we need to practice an art of attention to the inner rhythm of our days and lives, which will bring a new awareness of our own human and divine presence."

A Soul Friend develops "the art of paying attention to the inner rhythm" and listens for that which is in you.
